Provolone
A downloadable game for Windows
It was a regular afternoon sometime early 2013
as regular as these afternoons could be, as I was estranged from family and living in a garage, rather unsalutarily so. Nevertheless, things looked optimistic, I was enjoying a blooming relationship, had friends that kept my mind busy, had goals and dreams. Being 18, at least for me, was a strange mixture of overconfidence and extreme insecurity. But alas.
Then it struck upon me: What if I recorded this moment as a game? I stared at the screen, trying to come up with a name -- somehow that seems one of the hardest steps of making a game. That wouldn't deter me, however, as I had just bought some bread and sliced provolone. I stared at the sandwich laying in my hands and figured -- that'll be it. 'Provolone'. And thus, the game was born. I worked on it for a while, initially on RPG Maker 2000. It was greatly inspired by Epic Elf, although possibly not the 2013 version. It's some of the most fun I've had with a JRPG by the way, duly recommended.
As this game is a retelling of how I met my then-boyfriend,
and not long after we would break up, it's unsurprising that it was left in an unfinished state. But hopefully, beyond the charming sweetness of Will I have planted the seeds of a face-heel turn. Nevertheless, the very real people Will and Liza were inspired by are complex human beings whom, despite my not seeing in a decade, I still hold dearly to my chest. As such, and as of me writing this text it's been over 10 years of Provolone, I'd like to thank you for our memories together. You have become a part of me, forever.
